Even many die-hard Illinois collectors get it wrong when differentiating between the Illinois "Manhattan" and "New Yorker." They will say it depends on whether the seconds bit is at 6:00 or 9:00. Wrong. According to Fred Freidburg, the "dean" of Illinois watches, it's a Manhattan if it has a metal bracelet, and a New Yorker if it has a leather bracelet. Both models came with seconds at either 6:00 or 9:00. So here we have a model with seconds at 9:00, which is the more scarce variation. With the leather band, it's currently a New Yorker. If you want a Manhattan, just put a metal bracelet on it! This is a beautiful Illinois watch, near 90 years old!
